Guido vs. Cowboy

On the heels of the last blog entry detailing how I plan to track the miles I run in 2012, my buddy Tex issued me a challenge. The challenge is that we both track our mileage for the year (starting yesterday), and whoever has more for the year gets a free dinner at the other one's expense at the 2013 NIRSA conference in Vegas. I'm all in. Any time I can use some lighthearted gambling to motivate my fitness routine, that's a win-win. Unless I lose. Which I don't plan on doing.

But of course we have to set a few ground rules, since there is something at stake here. Beyond the free dinner, there are bragging rights at stake. Maybe I should be a little nervous, since the bet was his idea, and he started thinking about the rules right away. But I'm not that nervous. Anyway, the rules.

1- Basketball doesn't count. He asked this in an email, since we both like playing pickup ball, and suggested the possibility of wearing a pedometer while doing so. While that is tempting, given my numbers nerdyness and now curiosity at how many miles you run while hooping, I don't think it should count. We agreed.

2- Warmup walking counts. Since we both work at rec centers, I am guessing a fair amount of the running may be on a treadmill. So the question was whether or not to count the quarter mile you may walk as a warmup. I voted for yes, if for no other reason than to not have to subtract warmup and cool down mileage from the number on the treadmill. So laziness plays a part in a bet focused on fitness. I seem doomed from the start.

3- Only workout mileage counts. We can't count any walking besides on the treadmill. Nor can we count any miles running from police or to the bathroom after a chili lunch.

4- The mileage started yesterday, not January 1. And will end on January 18, so it's a full year.

5- We update each other on mileage whenever the other calls for an update. Doesn't have to be once a month, just whenever. I am fine with going off honor code, though he brought up possibly keeping track on a calendar, scanning that, and emailing it. Hold on there cowboy, that's too much work for me.

And those are the rules. And before I close this out, I should explain the title. He suggested it, since we both live in stat that may unfairly stereotype it's inhabitants as being those- guidos in Jersey, cowboys in Texas, while neither of us are those things.

I'll close with a final vote of confidence in myself, because I won the only game of HORSE we have ever played against each other. So there.

Since I can't figure out how to embed a video using the iPad yet, I will just copy paste one that includes the words Guido and cowboy. Enjoy.

Any reference to Dom Mazzetti is a highly reputable post.

Also, it appears that you posted this after 9:30 PM, which means you did not just go home from PB's and sleep, so kudos for that.

First off, congrats on beating me in the one basketball game that involves very little athletic talent. Way to go...I am sure your parents are proud!
Second, I am at 7.5 miles (total) after the weekend...figured I would give you an update. - Tex
